Posted on: August 18, 2011

British film and stage actor Chiwetel Ejiofor was first seen by film audiences in 1996's Deadly Voyage. His first leading role was as the Nigerian cab driver Okwe in Stephen Frears' 2002 film Dirty Pretty Things.

Ejiofor's film career continued with such notable roles as The Operative in Joss Whedon's Serenity, Dewey Hughes in Talk To Me and Jiu-Jitsu master Mike Terry in David Mamet's Redbelt.

Despite his Hollywood success, Ejiofor hasn't given up his stage career. In 2007, he reprised the role of Othello at the Donmar Warehouse, a 250-seat theater in London's West End.

Ejiofor is rumored to be on the shortlist to play T'Challa in a proposed Black Panther movie based on the Marvel comic book character.

Early Life

Ejiofor was born in London to Nigerian parents. His father was a doctor and his mother a pharmacist. Ejiofor joined the National Youth Theatre at an early age and moved on to the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts. He drew critical praise for his turn in the title role of Othello at the Bloomsbury Theatre in 1995.
